Operation School Bell Brings Smiles and New Essentials to Key Elementary School Students
Last Wednesday, Key Elementary School students received a surprise that brought excitement and gratitude to our entire community. Thanks to Operation School Bell, an initiative led by the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, students were treated to a shopping experience right in their school gymnasium.
Since its founding in 1995, Operation School Bell has made a significant impact in our region, having served over 20,000 local children. This year, they transformed Key Elementary’s gym into a shopping center filled with racks of brand-new clothing and supplies, allowing every student from third grade and above to select their own winter essentials.
With the help of dedicated volunteer personal shoppers, students had the opportunity to pick out a winter coat, mittens, two shirts, a package of underwear, a package of socks, a toiletry kit, and a duffle bag—all completely free of charge. As students tried on their new clothes, the gym filled with laughter and big smiles. Volunteers held mirrors to help students decide on their choices, adding a personal touch that made each child feel valued.
The Assistance League, an all-volunteer nonprofit organization, annually supports approximately 1,000 students in each county of metropolitan Detroit. With a mission to clothe, feed, educate, and comfort children and adults through community programs, the League’s generosity helps families in need across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties.
“The Assistance League really makes a difference in the lives of children,” shared Director of Communications/Public Relations, Brandon Jiles.
