Miss Black America Visits Oak Park Schools to Inspire Young Readers
Oak Park Schools welcomed a special guest in celebration of National Reading Month! The 55th Miss Black America, Ashley Myatt, a proud Detroit native, visited all of our elementary schools and Lessenger Early Childhood Center to promote the joy and importance of reading.
During her visit, Ashley engaged with students by reading books and sharing her inspiring journey as both a model and a veterinary technician. Our students were captivated by her stories and had plenty of questions about her career, which she answered with enthusiasm and encouragement.
“It is a tremendous honor to welcome so many distinguished leaders into our schools, where they have the opportunity to inspire and uplift our most precious treasures—our children. Seeing their engagement and encouragement reaffirms the vital role education plays in shaping bright futures. This is the very reason I chose to return home—to the same community that educated and inspired me more than 30 years ago. The impact that dedicated mentors and leaders had on my life continues to drive my passion for ensuring every student in Oak Park has the same opportunity to dream, achieve, and succeed.” — Superintendent Angel Abdulahad
Ashley’s visit left a lasting impression on our young learners, showing them that with hard work and dedication, they too can achieve their dreams. Oak Park Schools is grateful for her time and the inspiration she brought to our students.
Thank you, Ashley Myatt, for making National Reading Month even more special for our schools!
